Baby Ear Infections/Riding HillSide

Interesting News:

Ear Infections (Otitis Media, OM)
Reoccurring ear infections account for over 35% of all pediatrician visits in the United States. Sometimes these infections are due to bacteria and sometimes these are due to a virus. The most common medical care for this situation has been antibiotics, even though antibiotics have no effect on viruses. The antibiotic may be effective in an acute bacterial infection; but it does nothing to stop repeat infections. It is also possible that repeated use of antibiotics may contribute to future infections by creating drug-resistant infections. Another conventional approach to repeated ear infection is the surgical implantation of a drain tube. These tubes often come out and usually require a child to be put under general anesthesia to do the surgery.

Several studies showing the effectiveness of chiropractic care for preventing re-occurring ear infections were reviewed in the October 1998 issue of the Ladies Home Journal in an article entitled, "Chiropractic Adjustments for Chronic Ear Infections." Chiropractic care is useful in preventing recurrent infections by correcting misalignments and allowing normal fluid drainage from the middle ear. What was more important was that 6 months after the chiropractic care was given to the children in the study, 80 percent had not suffered a recurrence of ear infections.

In the March 1998 edition of Alternative Therapies and authored by Fallon and Edelman reported a study involving 401 Children with Otitis Media. The authors found a strong correlation between chiropractic adjustment and the resolution of otitis media for the children in this study.

If your child is between ear infections and his doctor suggests ear-tube surgery, ask if you can try chiropractic treatment first.

While I was at the shop lastnight brutha Bruce Hiendriks (sorry for the last name butchery) came in. While we were BSing, we talked about baby ear infections. His little man had many....so they did the tubes....they keep coming out....so they went for Chiropractic care...it worked:) Something I never ever would have thought about.
Getting out this afternoon for a few loops on HillSide before going to the shop....want to come meet me there at 2pm:)

Peace

Babies and children experience ear infections due to the size of their skulls. Chiropractic care in regard to infants is dangerous at best. Being they are growing daily there would be no need for such a treatment.
I wonder how old the kids were who they did the study on on what season they did the study in then finished the experiment.. most kids get ear infections in the colder shut in months of winter then when spring hits,. few months later.. they're ear infection free....

Interesting- I had tubes put in my teens and my youngest son had them also. They worked in both cases...Hope all works out well.

Thanks for the morels. We fried them up as soon as we got home. Syd had alot of ear infections. When she was about 4 we had tubes put in and it worked great. There is nothing worse then seeing your child cry from pain and there is nothing you can do to help them. I hope this is just a fluke with Izzy and you won't have to worry about it.

Tubes take 15 minutes to put in and have completely changed The Bug into a happy little boy. No regrets for going that route here at all.

This is brutha Bruce...

For the record, the tubes did work very well for almost a year. We had them put in when my son was 13 months old as he as getting ear infections from 2 months on. He was on a cycle of 10 days of antibiotics and then 10 days clear then infection again.

After the tubes fell out (several months later) we had a few clear months. And actually those included the "shut in" months according to Franks post.

This spring the infections started again. We went back to the MD and they said this is the last round of oral anti-biotics. Next is anti-biotic injections or tubes again.

So, what's my choice? Spend my large deductible again for a tubes/surgery, put my son on yet another higher level of antibiotics (putting his ability to use antibiotics later in life at risk) OR go the the chiro and have a few gentle adjustments to make sure his ears drain.

I consulted with one of my closest friends, who happens to be a chiropractor, about this procedure and he did not hard sell me on it. We gave it a try the last time and it worked.

I'm realistic, I won't say "I'll swear by it..." but it worked for us and was the best alternative I had. My recommedation is that for chronic, and I do emphasize chronic, ear infections, try chiropractic.

Thanks for reading.
