Going Solo this Year

For this years 24hrs of Iowa race I've made the decision of going solo. Hell.... why not..... I love to ride me bike and I sure as hell ain't gett'n any younger (before you know it I'll be acting like Cam):) Today started me training, well if you call riding more often training then thats what I'll be doing:) The commute this morning was killer, perfect morning temps at 5am, a damn nice sunrise as I rolled into work, the Bianchi felt much nicer after putting the 53x19 back on:) After last years Rassy team win I wanted to go solo this year, but wanting and finishing aren't in the same basket of eggs. So for this whole month I'll be jotting down me riding and shit, of thangs I feel I need to do to finish a 24hr SS solo race at Boone.

I weighed in at 156 this morning, that is roughly 8-10lbs heavier than my ideal race weight for XC. I'm thinking if I get down too say 146-148 I should be carring enough fatty substance to burn in the wee hours of the race..... hey I didn' say I was a pro at this shit did I. Most all of me training will just be riding and alot of it, some of us Rassy mates are heading up to Boone on Thursday for some riding of the course. I'll be doping up with some Sport Legs though out this whole month and during the race. Hell I'm just curious of all these pills:)

Any of you 24hr solo SS'n mates have any words of wisdom let them shine on me now.

Peace Mates

What? Expert Legs would require a licence right? That site kinda looks "As advertised on TV".

Beer and bourbon almost worked for Blahut a couple of years ago.

If anyone round here has a chance at kickin ass SS for 24hours, I believe it would be you. Get it on, brutha!!

Man, I hope it cools down by then.

A cooler full of cheap beer (preferably in a can) is a must. My preferred brand is Iron City, but I don't think it's available in Dead Moines. Do they still make Little Kings? Pony bottles of Little Kings may work just as well. I'd also suggest bringing the mental patch kit...

Nate burped a tire and burnt himself up catching back on, I don't know what happened to Jay.

Solo 24 hours, yes. Seven Oaks or UMCA is the question. I've got till the 20th for someone else to figure it out for me.

Seven Oaks course descrition: switchback hell. Fun as shit in the mud. On the flipside, I can ride it in my sleep now.

I'll be in town Thursday for the Elkhart TT finale, maybe if they wrap it up quick enough I can roll out a lap at the Center with ya. Badger is out of paint, hope to have it together by then.

I've emailed Alread about me change of plans for the SS team gig, we (Rassy's) still have plenty O mates for the recking crew of an all ss team.
Let me know of Thursday, I'm getting off and heading straight to Boone for a couple laps, need to find the perfect (yeah right) gear.

Hi Squirrel,
IN regard to training. If you haven't or aren't into calling what you need to do "training" that's good. Because training mostly burns out a racer, especially this time of the year.
I'd suggest a few things if I may, being that you are already an excellent rider, bike handler and racer.
1.) Lift weights. This goes against all logic, yes, I know, but so does riding a single speed mountain bike...the weights can only help, any weight gain will only make you stronger, this you will burn any excess fat that your body doesn't need in a short amount of time.
2.) when riding the road bike, try to do 4 rides a week that are over 2 hours, for the forst 2 weeks. then build up to one weekly death ride, that starts out at a comfprtable pace and practice eating different things along the ride..find out what makes you shit yourself, causes cramps, or does wonders for you On the bike. Also incorpoorate drinks that may help you.
3.) practice rythym riding. Rythym riding is riding with your friends and let them go, then chase them down, them let them go again and chase them down again.. it's like doing intervals but harder, because of they wanna go hard, you'll have to catch them to do it again. it;s mostly a mind game.
4.) Indian sprints. sprint from the last ;position in your group or pace line then ease up to let everyone catch up to you, work your way to the back again, then sprint again....it's a fun workout......
5.) keep at least 2-3 funtioning bikes ready for the race, change nothing 2 weeks before the race, you probablly already know this though, sorry if it's a redundant thing.
6.)when doing road training, focus more on the recovery end, sleeping is more than ultra important in training than anything else. especially if you are lifting.
7.) did I mention weight training?...ignore all naysayers, it is ultimately important. Some poeple say, " what the fuck are you lifting weights for???!?!?" you can answer, " Because I want to kick your fucking ass... dick" that;s probablly the best way to handle any anti weight cyclists....weights good, scrawny bike racers, bad, they get hurt when they hit trees at noght when their light systems fail, then they cry and feel shame...
8.) don;t worry about the weights, you will not bulk up like a meat head, you will develope mecessary neurological muscle control that when tired you will have an extra kick ir 10 left in you, muscle is what makes the wheels go around, not hot air......
