It damages the trail by removing soil from the tread and creating a berm, which holds more water on the trail, leading to more damage, etc. Sure, some of the damage is repairable, but that labor could be better spent improving old and building new trails.
The trail damage makes mountain bikers look like assholes, and could lead to trail access problems for all MTB'ers, not just the racers. In a state that already views us suspiciously, why give anybody ammunition to keeps us off of the trails?
What I'm saying refers to riding on public land. If you want to scar up your own, private trails then knock yourself out!
well.... riding and racing in mud it happens it is part of life and as nakedfatchics matt said above there are some serious side effects but it is part of the sport but so is trail repair and trail assistance
we all need to ride responsibly we all need to ride with respect we do not want to leave too big of a foot print everyone leaves a foot print but we should not let ours be unnaturally large
I read an article that was anti-24 Hour racing....
I see the point but I love the 24 hour race format so much new trail is cut for and by the races that I am not sure that the negative side outweighs the good

Racing in the mud in Iowa is a bad idea.
